Cincinnati, OH – Know Theatre of Cincinnati will kick off its 10 Anniversary Season with the premier of acclaimed playwright Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman. With a storyline that focuses on a fiction writer’s unfortunate association to murders in his home city, The Pillowman provides the perfect psycho-drama for the Halloween season.
The Pillowman will be yet another regional premier at Know Theatre of Cincinnati, which has gained a reputation for bringing new works to the Cincinnati stage. McDonagh’s dark fantasy is his third work to play Cincinnati. McDonagh’s Tony Award-winner, Beauty Queen of Leenane (Playhouse in the Park) and Cripple of Inishmaan (Ensemble Theatre) have graced local stages in recent seasons.
The Pillowman is the story of Katurian, a writer whose dark fables seem to be coming to life. Police detain Katurian, as his garish stories are the only clue in a series of recent homicides. The interrogators stop at nothing to get answers they want. Scenes shift nimbly between a cramped interrogation room and the dynamic boundaries of Katurian’s imagination. The Pillowman explores family secrets, censorship and the irrepressible power of storytelling. The script is written in a Hitchcock meets Tarantino style that will keep audiences riveted until the final line is delivered.
The Pillowman opened on Broadway in 2005 to rave reviews. The production won the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play (Foreign), Tony’s for Best Lighting and Best Scenic Design of a Play and 2 Drama Desk Awards. Jeff Goldblum, who originated the role of Katurian, received the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play.
McDonagh is known for his signature story-telling, and is a favorite of Know Artistic Director, Jason Bruffy. “Very few living playwrights alive have been able to master the art of telling a story the way McDonagh has.” says Bruffy. “The play bounces from hilarity to horror with a turn of a phrase.”
Know Theatre is proud to welcome back actors Nick Rose and Derek Snow for the run of The Pillowman. Nick appeared in the audience favorite, Christmas Yet To Come and the Cincinnati Entertainment Award-winning Hamlet. Snow, a SCPA grad, appeared in godsplay as part of the 2006 Fringe Festival and will also appear in Topdog/Underdog later this season.
